Frequently Asked Questions

Klarity

Klarity is originally an American Company.Started by Mr Peter Larson, Larson Products Inc, Ohio, USA. He then entered into a tie-up with Mr.Deren Zhan of Klarity Medical, China and made an additional manufacturing base at china. seeing the cost benefit they slowly shifted 90% of manufacturing to their Chinese factory. Goods are made under stringent controls and regulations based on US FDA, CE, ISO

At present Klarity has a market presence of over 40% across the globe and 60% in India. with aggressive pricing, supported with excellent quality and worldwide acceptance. Klarity is poised to become world leader in another two years time.

There is a big misconception about this issue which has largely been created by the competitors since they don’t have anything to defend their over-priced products. NO CARBON FIBRE BOARD CAN BE MADE WITHOUT USING A CORE FOAM INSIDE. This core foam is nothing but a very strong honey comb design structure, almost hollow and gives excellent dimensional uniformity and strength. On either side of this core foam, layers of carbon fibre cloth are applied using epoxy. This gives the shiny looks and strength comes from the core inside. The whole purpose of this process is to make a base plate sturdy enough to withstand patient positioning and to remain RADIATION FRIENDLY.

if somebody claims to supply full carbon plate, then that will be heavier than acrylic and will not be radiation friendly. All the international companies follow the same pattern of manufacturing and use mainly ROHACELL as core foam. You may learn more on this subject on their website at www.rohacell.com or www.evonik.com

There are many fancy looking support cushions available in the market but we must not forget our priorities….we need sturdy support for millimeter accuracy and NOT soft comfortable cushion with positioning inaccuracies. Secondly, if the beam has to pass through the positioning material by any means, that material should always be carbon fibre and definitely not a foam cushion. otherwise the whole concept of buying an expensive positioning system fails. Foam cushions are soft and have limited life and patient position CAN NOT be securely and surely reproduced.

Both the positioning systems are good and practical. Conceptually, Medtec (now Civco) developed pushpin design and orfit developed clamp design. Eventually, based on their location, pushpin became popular in US and clamp type in Europe. In India both the designs are popular based on treatment choice and Klarity has both the solutions for base plates and thermoplastics. Klarity offers masks for Orfit, Civco, Macromedics, BrainLab, Elekta and Proton Therapy base plates.

The head rests we supply comes as a set of six marked as A to F. Each of these has a different elevation contour and gives all possible treatment positions. For attenuation free treatment these are available in carbon fibre design and thin acrylic. both the designs are hollow from the bottom and gives excellent sturdiness with zero attenuation. The TIMO head rests are available in Polyurethane and are soft. still if the need arise, we offer a Tilting Base Plate for elevation from 5°to 45°

Yes, these can be used. Hence, we do not create monopoly and price remains in your control.

Klarity is an international brand. Youngest company among competition and has over 40% market share worldwide ahead of all other brands established for over 30-40 years. They have all the identical base plates available in carbon fibre as well as acrylic, the others do not have all. Klarity listens to the users. if you have a good product suggestion supported with potential of sales, they can design a product based on an idea. All necessary world standards maintained, like, ISO, CE, FDA etc. Over and above they offer reasonably priced products.

Klarity has been dedicated to creating higher quality thermoplastic since our inception. Klarity masks have less-shrinkage, are less-sticky, and stronger than other mask brands. We provide different types of plastic, each with their own set up characteristics, to fit the needs of all clinics. We now offer four types of thermoplastic: Klarity White™, Klarity Green®, Klarity LiteGreen™, and Klarity Blue™. Each color has been specially formulated to offer different advantages and to work optimally with different frame-types and treatment systems. To minimize shrinkage, it is important to allow masks to completely cool before removing from the patient. We recommend leaving a mask on for at least 10 minutes. Moist towels can speed the cooling, but this will increase shrinkage. As water evaporates from the surface of a mask, the mask cools more quickly which increases the shrinkage. Masks made in an oven will shrink less, because there is no water evaporation.

In both water baths and ovens, an ideal temperature should be maintained between 165-170°F (73-77°C). Lower temperatures can cause uneven molding and inadequate working time. Higher temperatures can cause tackiness, excessive stretching and difficult handling.

Total heating time varies according to the thickness of the mask, heating method, ambient room temperature and the mask’s perforation pattern. Usual times are 1-2 minutes in a water bath, or 3-10 minutes in an oven, depending on the oven model. Be sure that the mask is thoroughly heated at the recommended temperature before removing from the oven or water bath. Masks will become translucent when heated, but an additional 30 seconds to a minute will insure complete and even heating. Learn more about the different types of Klarity Thermoplastics.

Klarity AccuPerf™ and reinforced masks are designed for the higher stability requirements of IMRT. Reinforcing strips hold firmly while the more open perforation areas allow for comfortable breathing and patient visibility.

Shims can be used if necessary, to relieve excessive shrinkage. However, with some Klarity thermoplastics, shims are usually not needed as long as masks are heated at the proper temperature (165˚F in an oven) and allowed to cool completely before being removed from the patient.

We recommend leaving the mask on the patient for at least 10 minutes. This minimizes shrinkage and insures an accurate fit for subsequent treatments.

Thicker (3.2mm) masks will provide the highest stability. However, thinner masks (2.4mm) may have less attenuation and are sometimes preferred. Learn more about the different types of Klarity Thermoplastics.

Klarity thermoplastic contains no latex and is not known to cause any allergic or skin sensitive reactions.

Yes. You can use scissors for custom cut-outs in all Klarity masks. We also offer Open Face and Open Eye & Mouth masks in several frame-types as an alternative to cutting masks yourself.

All thermoplastics eventually expire. Klarity masks have a shelf life of 3 years. Each Klarity mask has both the manufacture date and the expiration date printed on the label of the product bag for easy reference.

Klarity mask contain no toxic chemicals or components. They can be safely disposed of with normal hospital or household waste.
